Oil, Gas and Chemical Industry

Cables for the oil, gas and chemical industries must simultaneously meet certain sets of requirements:

• Chemical resistance: Resistant to oil, hydrocarbons, and chemicals.
• Fire safety: flame-retardant in accordance with IEC 60332, low-smoke and halogen-free in accordance with IEC 60754 / IEC 61034, or circuit-maintaining during fire in accordance with IEC 60331.
• Mechanical durability: features a steel armor layer and is resistant to vibrations and UV rays.
• Complies with project standards: EN 50288-7, PAS 5308, or UL (PLTC).

For offshore drilling rigs, FPSOs/FSOs, and LNG carriers, cables must have offshore certification from classification societies such as DNV GL or ABS. In the case of offshore hotel platforms, cables must also meet CPR requirements. The cable jacket must also be resistant to seawater, oil, UV rays, and ozone.

In hazardous areas, the cable entry into equipment must use ATEX-certified explosion-proof cable glands . HELU’s HELUTOP® HT-MS-EX-d cable glands:

• Suitable for Zones 1, 2, 21, 22, and gas groups IIA, IIB, and IIC;
• Meets IP66/IP68 protection ratings;
• There are versions for steel-armored cables (EX-d/e 4) and EMC-shielded versions (EX-d 1 EMV).

You need to use cables that maintain circuit integrity during a fire (fire-resistant), not just those that are flame-retardant. HELU offers two options:

• HELUDATA® EN-50288-7 FIRE RES: Instrument cable with fire-resistant mica tape , compliant with IEC 60331-21, LS0H jacket, hydrocarbon-resistant.
• HELUTHERM® FR BS 7629: Certified to LPCB, BS 6387 Class CWZ, and EN 50200 PH120. Class CWZ means the cable has been tested for 3 hours at 950°C, including a fire test with water spray and a fire test with mechanical impact.
