EU Machinery Regulation: What it means for cables and wires

Beginning in January 2027, the new EU Machinery Regulation replaces the previous Machinery Directive. For mechanical and plant engineers, as well as industrial users, this will bring safety, documentation, and reliability back into focus. Even cables and wires will play their own role in this.

With Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 on machinery, the European Union is creating a new legal framework for putting machinery and its related products into circulation. It comes into effect on the 20th of January 2027 and applies to all EU Member States and replaces the previous Machinery Directive 2006/42/EG.

The goal of the new regulation is to make machinery safer and to adjust legal frameworks according to modern technologies. This includes networked machines, digital operating instructions, software related to safety, topics pertaining to cyber security, and applications utilising artificial intelligence.   • Mechanical loads from movement, bending, or torsion
  • Environmental conditions such as temperature, oil, chemicals, or UV radiation

  • Use in drag chains, robotics, servo motors, or automation systems
  • Standards, approvals, and technical documentation

Implications for Vietnamese businesses

This EU regulation isn't just a European story. Many Vietnamese mechanical and equipment manufacturers exporting machinery to the EU — one of Vietnam's major export markets, especially since the EVFTA took effect — will be directly affected. From 20 January 2027, machinery placed on the EU market must comply with Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 instead of the previous Directive 2006/42/EC, meaning technical files, risk assessments, and conformity assessment procedures for CE marking will need to be updated to meet the new requirements — including additional requirements on cybersecurity and safety-related software.

In the domestic market, cables and wires used in industrial machinery in Vietnam are also governed by national technical regulations (QCVN) and Vietnamese standards (TCVN) issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology, most of which are built on international IEC standards — the same root standards as the EN system referenced in EU regulation. So choosing cables that meet international standards (IEC/EN) from the outset helps businesses meet domestic requirements while also making it easier to export machinery to the EU.
